Birthdays

Joey turned 12 this year. According to his very cool birthday card, the following is true:

  • He has slept almost 4 years.

  • He has eaten about 480 slices of pizza.

  • His heart has beaten about 441,504,000 times.

According to these statements:

  • How many hours on average has Joey slept each night?

  • How much pizza has he eaten per month?

  • How many times does his heart beat per minute?

◇ ◇ ◇

Joey's mom made cupcakes for his 11th birthday. She made 24 cupcakes and arranged them in rows and columns to form an array.

How many different arrangements of cupcakes could she have made? Show all the arrangements.

Swan Boats

The Public Garden was founded in Boston in 1837, as a place designated for enjoying the beauty of the gardens and the pond.If visiting the Public Garden today, you can take a ride on the famous swan boats, first introduced to the Garden by Robert Page in 1877.

Originally, the boats carried 8 passengers. Today, they are built with 6 rows, carrying up to 18 passengers .How many more passengers can the swan boats take on a ride today than back in 1877?

◇ ◇ ◇

If a boat has 6 rows and carries 18 passengers and up to 4 passengers can be seated in a row, what are all the different ways that passengers could be seated – that is how many passengers in each of the 6 rows? Show at least two different arrangements.

◇ ◇ ◇

The Swan Boats are supported by two pontoons. Each pontoon is 30 feet long by three feet wide and weighs about 800 lbs. All other boat equipment weighs 1,600 lbs. The boat can carry about 18 adults per boat. If the average adult weighs 150 pounds, and if the swan boat is carrying 18 adults, how much will the boat plus the passengers weigh altogether?

◇ ◇ ◇

The two pontoons supporting the boat are 30 feet long. Is that longer or shorter than your classroom? How can you find out?
