Butterfly Math
Each fall, monarch butterflies migrate from the Eastern states to Southern California and Mexico, travelling 2,500 to seek a warmer winter climate. As our weather turns cooler, and butterflies begin their journey south, try these butterfly math problems!
Early Childhood
Draw a butterfly on a piece of paper. Identify the line of symmetry. Draw at least three other shapes that are symmetrical.
Upper Elementary
Once the temperature drops in winter, butterflies pack closely together onto trees and branches. The average monarch butterfly weights 500 mg. How much would a branch covered with 12,000 butterflies weigh in grams? In kilograms? Explain your thinking.
Middle School
Conservationists monitoring butterfly populations found that throughout the early winter months (Nov-Dec), 4,000 butterflies had died due to unknown causes. After a heavy January storm, 2.5 million more butterflies were dead. Using variables, write math equations to show the effect of the storm on the butterfly population.
