Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) believed that all people were created equal and he helped to make sure that African Americans were treated the same as all other people in America. We celebrate his life on his birthday in January every year, as he is a person who changed the world.

MLK and his wife had four children – two were daughters. How many were sons?

Which group has the smallest number?  How do you know?

New Year’s

As a New Year’s resolution, Gina decided to eat two pieces of fruit every day.  If Gina keeps her resolution, how many pieces of fruit would she eat in a week? In a month?  Describe the strategy you used to solve the problem.

WEATHER PROBLEMS

On Monday the temperature was 18 degrees. On Tuesday the temperature was 9 degrees. Which day was warmer? How do you know? Show both temperatures on a number line.

Joey watched the forecast which told him that the high temperature for the day was 27 degrees and the low temperature for the day was 10 degrees. What is the difference between the forecasted high and low temperature for that day?

Show how you know.

Jessica saw that with wind chill, the temperature would feel like -4 degrees outside. Explain what it means to be in the negative degrees?
