Pinecones

This sculpture of a giant pinecone was created by Floyd Elzinga and measures  70”x54”. 

What do you notice? What do you wonder?

Corn

Corn was one of the primary foods grown and eaten by Native Americans.  

A corn stalk produces three ears of corn, and one ear of corn has 600 kernels.

How many kernels of corn would be found in 22 stalks?

Thanksgiving

Mrs. Looney  is making Thanksgiving dinner for 13 people. She plans to make pumpkin pies. Each pie will have 8 pieces. Everyone loves her pies so much that each person usually wants 2 pieces! 

How many pies will Mrs. Looney have to make? Show and explain your solution.

Twelve guests will attend Thanksgiving dinner. Each guest eats approximately 8 oz. of turkey.

How many pounds of turkey is needed to feed the guests?  Show how you know.

Turkeys have between 5000 and 6000 feathers. 

 If I have 6 turkeys, about how many feathers could there be?

Party Guests

There were 84 guests at a party. Square tables and round tables were used for seating. Each square table seats 8 guests and each round table seats 10 guests. 

How many square tables and round tables could have been used so that all 84 students had a seat and there were no empty seats?
