Candles

For Kwanzaa, there are 7 candles on the table. The candles are green, red, and black. There is one black candle and the same number of green and red candles.

How many green and red candles are there? Show how you know.

Candles have been used for light and to illuminate celebrations for more than 5,000 years. During December, many celebrations involve lighting candles. Here are some candle problems for you to consider:

Jackson lights a candle at 2:00 and it burns until 5:00. How many hours did his candle burn? Explain your solution.

A menorah is a candle holder used to celebrate Hanukkah. A menorah has 8 candles. The Jones family lit all but two candles on their Hanukkah. How many candles did they light? Show how you know.
