Thanksgiving

Grandma made 12 pies for Thanksgiving.

5 pies are apple pies.

4 pies are pecan pies.

The rest are pumpkin pies.

How many pumpkin pies are there? Show how you know.

 ◇ ◇ ◇

Aunt Millie wants to make three apple pies for Thanksgiving dinner.  If she needs five apples to make one pie, how many apples are needed to make three pies?  Use a math model to show your work.

 ◇ ◇ ◇

Sammy saw a flock of 8 turkeys crossing the road.

There were 2 full grown adult turkeys in the flock. The rest were babies.

How many turkeys were babies? Show how you know.

  • Trish answered that there were 10 babies because 8 + 2 = 10

  • Erin said she used subtraction. She answered that there were 6 turkeys because 8 - 2 = 6

  • Kevin said that he used addition. He said that there are 6 because 6 + 2 = 8.

Who solved the problem correctly? Who did not? Explain.

◇ ◇ ◇

An adult male turkey called gobbler weighs between 16 to 22 pounds.

A female turkey called a hen is smaller, weighing between 8 to 12 pounds.

A group of turkeys is called a rafter.

  • When it comes to male and female turkeys, are gobblers or hens larger? Explain how do you know?

  • What is the difference in weight between a gobbler and a hen? Prove your answer using a number line model.

  • How many legs are there in a rafter of 10 turkeys? Use a math drawing and a matching equation to prove your answer.

Feathers

Native Americans used feathers for decorations on many of their tools, such as arrows.

A man had 8 arrows with red feathers and 3 arrows with yellow feathers.

How many more arrows have red feathers than yellow feathers? Use a math model to show how you know.
