Johnny Appleseed Day

September 26th is the birthday of John (Johnny Appleseed) Chapman who helped early settlers start farms as they moved west, through the gift of apple seeds.  Enjoy these Johnny Appleseed and Apple-themed fall math problems!

Early Childhood

A bushel of apples contains 4 small apples.  If three of the apples are red, and the rest are green, how many apples are green?  Draw a math model.

Upper Elementary

Jacob and Norah each have an apple to eat for snack.  Jacob cuts his apple into eighths, and eats three of the slices.  Norah cuts her apple into twelfths, and eats half of the slices.  What fraction of the two apples remains?  Explain your thinking.

Middle School

In an orchard of 360 apple trees, a farmer planted ¾ of the trees Gala, and 1/8 Red Delicious and 1/8 Macintosh apple trees.  But during a severe drought, the farmer loses 1/3 of the Gala trees and ¾ of the Macintosh trees.  How many apple trees survived the drought?  Write a matching equation with a variable to show your thinking.
